Welcome to On The Rocks Charters 2010 Season

 August 20 2010

Fishing this past week has brought some unsettled weather  last weekend with wind and threats of Thunder. The bite in Newport remains the same. Fish can be found on structure but no signs of large schools of fish feeding. The Block Island area is still producing fish  but the bite has slowed with more Bluefish eager to take your offering. Still not many sightings of the hard tail or Small tuna. I will be out again soon look for my report Until Then Tight lines

Aug 10 2010

The talk of Bonito in the Newport area continues but I cant confirm. I will be fishing the area the next few days and  hope to land  some Atlantic Bonito. These speedsters are a handful on light tackle. The Striper bite in the Newport area is slow but they are there if you know where to look. The bluefish have been all over but not in any one location. This tells me the bait is moving around. Block Island is still  fishing very well  with Stripers taken on every trip. My sports have caught there limit of nice Stripers consistently . It the middle of August and the fishing could bust open any day. There is small bait in all the estuaries they are moving out with every tide. look for my report s Until Then Tight  Lines

Newport  to Block Island

The warmer water temps in the Newport area has slowed the action a little, the bait fish now moves around freely without predators feeding on them. My last outing's have taken me to the cooler waters of Block Island . Both the fly fisherman and the spin caster have scored on all charters. The deeper cooler waters around the coast of the island make for a perfect place for the big fish to hold. I have found fish on the  many different contour lines  in depths from 50-100 ft. Fly fisherman are using deep sinking lines with sand eel imitations to get the job done. While light tackle sports are using the vertical approach with the new style knife jigs. If you have not tried these jigs you should . I will be out again soon look for my report. Until Then Tight Lines

July 24: 2010

 Newport to Block Island report

The Newport area is loaded with bait fish from Narragansett Bay to Newport and down the coast  of Narragansett. Small bait loads of small bait . the fishing has been great  in the early morning hours and the  few hours before sunset./ Big bluefish on the surface with Stripers holding below.

The Block Island area is also loaded with bait and most days big stripers can be found  in the deeper water. The rocky shore on the South East side and the  South side give the  light tackle fisherman a great opportunity to score. the month of July is almost  gone and soon the dog days of August  will be upon us. Oh Sorry the dog days are already hear. It is hot and the bite is strong in the early morning. get out  early and catch them quick.

I will be out soon Until Then Tight Lines.

Another good day in Newport

Fishing in the Newport area continues to be good, find the bait and the fish are feeding heavily. Another mixed bag today with Bluefish up to 8lbs and Stripers in the 10 lb range. Top water plugs will get viscous strikes from the splashing Bluefish. And using a deeper presentation will produce some very nice bass. I will be out again tomorrow and will post a report. Until The Tight Lines

Fishing in the Newport area. The fishing this week  has been very consistent. Boaters are  able to head out beyond the Bridges and find huge schools of bait, Most of the time with a mixed bag of Stripers and Bluefish feeding. The fish have been selective at time but are ready to take soft plastic and fly's. The week has change weather wise with less humid days. have made fishing very enjoyable. The bait  seems to be holding steady and could be excellent fishing for a while. I will be out  again soon look for my report. Until Then Tight lInes

As the month of June comes to an end the weather is heating up. we have moved into the summer mode for the fishing tactics as well. We experienced the warmest spring in a very long time, that is a fact. The small bait is prolific in the open water of RI sound. From Newport t to Block Island there is bait every where. This is a little early for this, most years the Narragansett Bay is still holding  large fish at this time. Things change we need to change with them or get left behind. The striper fishing in the Newport area is good and Block Island is also fishing well. The Fluke bite is awesome now with big fluke taken on every trip. Now is the time to book your next charter. Look for my reports Until then tight  Lines.

The fishing season is under way and things change all the time there is big bait in Narragansett Bay along with a good push of silversides. the problem is the bait is scattered across the bay. Which means the fish are on the move, hear today gone tomorrow. Find the bait find the fish is the rule most of the time. But not this year the fish are on the move constantly. I have found few fish on Structure and most are in deep water. Deep sinking lines seem to work the best. good electronics are the key but slow cursing is required to find  fish. This pattern could change and fish should  move to structure looking for other food. I will be out again looking in all my favorite places. Until Then tight lInes.

The season is under way with the presence of small bait fish added the mix. The Squid has started to arrive and the Herring  have flooded into the rivers in good numbers. The Striper's already  working the bait to the surface in the shallow water where the temps are more favorer able. The first keeper Stripers have been caught and released to fight again. Looks like a good start to the season. I will be out again soon Look for my report
